David Nicholas is a software consultant and technical architect specializing in large-scale distributed systems, workflow orchestration, and backend infrastructure. He’s spent years building resilient systems across blockchain, e-commerce, and medical supply manufacturing. As a technical leader, David has helped teams design and scale distributed systems, improve reliability and observability practices, strengthen data security, and build internal tooling and platform infrastructure. He’s particularly experienced with Temporal workflow orchestration, having designed and executed several complex production migrations: from Cadence to Temporal Cloud, self-hosted Temporal to Temporal Cloud, and between self-hosted Temporal environments. When he’s not working, David likes to explore mathematical concepts through code, hunt for bugs, and travel.

Temporal at Scale: Lessons in Migration and Security
ABSTRACT
In this talk, we’ll share how and why we migrated a custom self-hosted Temporal Stack first to Open Source Temporal/self-hosted clusters and then to Temporal Cloud. We will cover critical security design, incident mitigation strategies & observability metrics & processes put in place to drive a 12-person team to be successful in coordinating a 300+ namespace/services migration with zero downtime.
