Supercharging Cloud Orchestration using Temporal Open Source

This presentation details Capital One’s journey to modernize its cloud provisioning platform, transitioning from static infrastructure and complex choreographed deployments to a unified Durable Execution model using Temporal Open Source. The shift was driven by the need to overcome challenges like troublesome state management, heavy SDLC burden and complex decentralized failure handling. The new platform ensured improved resiliency, fault-tolerance, and massive gains in cross-team observability. The implementation is guided by principles like “Code First, Not Config” and “Reliable Rollbacks”. Key takeaways include architectural and deployment lessons along with best practices for running on Temporal Open Source.

Vivek Gupta, a Distinguished Engineer and Director of Software Engineering at Capital One, spearheads enterprise-wide AWS cloud modernization initiatives. He drives large-scale tech transformations and well-managed cloud adoption, delivering resilient, developer-centric platforms within highly regulated environments. Vivek translates strategic vision into tangible outcomes while championing operational excellence. He actively mentors leaders and engineers, overseeing Capital One's Durable Execution CoP and Databases Center of Excellence to foster innovation and collaboration. He utilizes his deep expertise in cloud-native architectures and distributed systems to maximize engineering practices that deliver lasting business impact. On a personal note, Vivek lives in Arlington, VA, with his wife and enjoys skiing, climbing, and birdwatching.
Joseph Gilbert is a Senior Manager at Capital One with over two decades of experience spanning software development, engineering leadership, and technical architecture. He currently leads the deployment of Temporal for Capital One's Cloud Operations and Resilience Engineering Group. His expertise in cloud computing, distributed systems, and enterprise architecture makes him a valuable asset in provisioning Capital One's cloud architecture. Joseph holds a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from BYU and Master's degrees in both Computer Science and Biomedical Science. He is married with five children and 2 grandchildren and enjoys spending time with his family.
