Retool Agents: Building a Robust, Production-Ready AI Agent Platform with Temporal

Retool Agents enables users to deploy AI-driven workflows that reason, route, and act—powered under the hood by Temporal. We present how we extended our Temporal-based workflow engine into an end-to-end agent orchestration system—with dynamic tool routing in an LLM-driven loop, step-level observability, and human-in-the-loop capabilities—to launch a robust, production-ready agent platform.

Lam Tran is a Software Engineer at Retool, building developer tooling for complex, distributed applications. He has led efforts across agent monitoring, AI-powered application generation, and performance observability, helping teams understand how their systems behave in production — not just how they’re written. Lam is particularly interested in orchestrating durable, agent-driven systems with humans in the loop, and in evolving traditional distributed systems thinking for a new digital era. His work focuses on building tools that align complex systems with human understanding, so technology serves people rather than the other way around.
