From Bottlenecks to Self-Service: How Duolingo Built Workflow-as-a-Service with Temporal Nexus
We built a self-service platform on Temporal Nexus, enabling cross-namespace, secure workflows with human-in-the-loop controls. This transformation boosted developer productivity, eliminated manual toil, and spurred adoption. Today it’s expanding into a company-wide platform: teams expose their own workflows via Nexus, and we’re scaling Slack integration, onboarding, and governance.
Zhihao Wang is a Senior Software Engineer on Duolingo’s Cloud Operations team, where he builds infrastructure automation and platform engineering solutions at scale. He led the design and development of Duolingo’s Temporal Self-Service Platform, evolving it from a team tool into an organization-wide workflow-as-a-service platform powering diverse production use cases. Zhihao also builds the infrastructure, tooling, and best-practice patterns around Temporal to empower engineers across Duolingo to adopt workflows for a wide range of use cases.
